Tech Tip No.1 – The Power of Podcasts

Published by Lowri Robbins on

Podcasts have been around for some time now, but it’s never too late to jump on the bandwagon!

A podcast is an online audio recording show, similar to that of a radio show, that is available on-demand, with more than 7 million people in the UK listening to podcasts each week. Podcasts offer countless topics to listen and learn about, from gardening to politics to beekeeping… There really is something out there for everyone!

Podcasts are perfect to listen to when you have free time, perhaps when you’re getting ready or when you’re cooking dinner. Many studies have shown the benefits that podcasts have on people mentally. They are proven to stimulate mental imagery more intensively than reading, causing listeners to pay more attention. It forces listeners to use their imagination; the more regularly that you listen to podcasts, the stronger and more vivid your imagination.

Podcasts can also help to combat loneliness and social isolation… sometimes just the sound of a friendly voice carrying a conversation can help. When focusing on podcasts, you can immerse yourself in the topic and really feel involved. Although it might be virtual, it’s nice to have a topic you’re engaged with!

Here are some of our podcast recommendations, with how to access them.

Desert Island Discs

Desert Island Discs has been heralded as the ‘greatest radio programme of all time’, so you can see why we have made it number 1. The theme of the show is that an inspiring guest presents 8 music tracks, 1 book, and 1 luxury item they would take to a desert island. Quite often this sparks interesting conversations around their life story.

Some of our recommended podcasts are:

  • Dame Judi Dench (2016)
  • Maya Angelou (1987)

Funnily enough, despite its name, this podcast attracts a lot of male listeners, which make up 40% of their total audience, demonstrating that despite the general theme, the content engages everyone! This podcast is the second most popular BBC Radio podcast. The first 45 minutes consist of debates surrounding women’s issues such as relationships, health, and motherhood. Whilst the last 15 minutes features a short-run drama series.
