My week with Your Back Yard – Jazmine Hillary

Published by Victoria Norman on

Hi, I’m Jazmine. I am studying physical Geography at the University of Liverpool but am originally from sunny Scarborough. I gained a week of work experience at Your Backyard through the Xperience program, run by UpReach.

At the start of the week, I didn’t quite know what to expect to be doing. I was most looking forward to seeing how a social enterprise ran from behind the scenes. I was also keen to push myself out of my comfort zone and help assist in teaching over 60s how to use their technological devices.

Each day was different and exciting. My favourite part of the week was attending a meeting with Jeff, a business consultant, who helped us set out a plan for Your Backyard, sharing his expertise. It was fascinating to have a glimpse of what goes into directing the business and understand how the bids for funding projects works and the challenges faced by social enterprises/CICs struggling to maintain funding for long-lasting sustainable projects.

I had the pleasure of attending two projects set up by Your Backyard: walking football in Bramley and a digital inclusion class at Daisyfield. I thoroughly enjoyed both, but I have to say I was shocked at how much I loved the football. It was so refreshing to see people of all abilities come together just to move their bodies and socialize.

Overall, I have had a great insight into the admin and the delivery side of Your Backyard. Although my time has been short, I have learned many valuable skills that will stay with me for future jobs.

I’d like to say thank you to Tony and Victoria for making me feel welcome and showing me the ropes. You were both a pleasure to work with.
