About me: an undergraduate student on a placement year with YBY

Published by Tony Mullin on

Hi! My name’s Tori and I’ve just started a placement year with Your Back Yard in Leeds. I study BA Politics and Social Policy at the University of Leeds, and completed my second year of studies last summer. I decided to do a year in industry with Your Back Yard because I’m interested in community led regeneration, and in finding out how a third sector organisation functions, particularly in today’s political climate. I have also enjoyed learning about how to conduct original research, analyse data, and consequently suggest appropriate points of improvement during my time at university, and was keen to put these skills into practice in the workplace. I was therefore thrilled when I was offered the role of ‘Research and Community Liaison Officer’, which is a position I will hold for the next 10 months. During this time, I hope to work on a variety of projects, ensuring that everyone in the local community has access to high quality green spaces, and to community centres that hold events people find valuable.

During my placement I hope to improve my research skills, written and verbal communication skills, and increase my awareness of the third sector and its place in society. I also hope to grow my professional network, meeting new people and finding out about what others in the local area are doing to improve the lives of people across the North. Above all, I look forward to trying new things and gaining new skills, which will not only benefit me in the long term, but will also hopefully be beneficial to those who profit from the great work Your Back Yard do.

I’m sure you’ll be seeing more updates from me over the next 10 months as Tony and I let you know about the exciting projects we’ll be working on, so stay tuned!
