Busy Autumn Ahead!
Hi everyone! As we head into autumn, we are eager to let you all know about our exciting, upcoming projects!
Bramley walking Football
We have the first session of the Bramley Walking Football Club in partnership with Bramley Elderly Action.
The session is at 10am on Monday the 16th September at the Bramley Community Center. Subsequent sessions will be held there every Monday at 10am.
It is a great opportunity to make new friends and get involved in sport at a leisurely pace as there is no running allowed, and there are other rules that prevent the ball from going too high, and anyone from getting injured. You do not have to have any prior experience in football and all abilities are welcome to attend!
The BEA craft group have also kindly offered to knit some football scarves in support of the event and local ukulele group The Bops have recorded a version of the Match of The Day theme tune to show their support. The session is free, and transport is available for £3.50 for a return.
If you’re interested in coming along, please either contact Bramley Elderly Action on 0113 236 1644 or Your Back Yard (see details below)
Please see the flyer below for further information.
Neighbourhood Network sports sessions
As we previously announced we are also delighted to have received £10,000 from Sport England to fund free taster sessions of a variety of sports including walking netball, walking rugby, walking football, tai chi and yoga for older people’s Neighbourhood Networks across Leeds.
Around 15 neighbourhood networks have already expressed their interest in being involved with this wonderful project. The sessions will be ran by instructors who are experienced in working with older people so will be at a nice easy-going pace. All genders and abilities are welcome to attend!
There will be opportunities to socialise both before and after the sessions and there will also be a walking sports tournament at the end of the taster sessions, giving you the opportunity to expand your social circles and bond over a shared meal and common interests.
If you are aged over 50, live in Leeds, and are interested in trying out walking sports for free, then please contact Your Back Yard using the details below or contact your local Neighbourhood Network Scheme: https://www.leeds.gov.uk/docs/Neighbourhood%20network%20schemes.pdf to find out whether they are taking part.
People’s Postcode Lottery
We have also received some funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery to put on some taster sessions for a variety of sports such as bowles, tai chi and chair-based yoga with well-liked instructors who have strong links to the community.
These sessions will be ran in collaboration with local groups such as, Different Strokes, Rhino Active Social, Catch Up Club, OWLS Lads Lunch, and BEA Stroke Club. Stay tuned for upcoming details regarding specific dates and activities.
Heights and Bawns
Finally, we are also excited to announce that Your Back Yard have received funding to lead a project across Heights and Bawns that aims to improve people’s physical health and well-being, reduce loneliness and digital exclusion and bring together people of all ages and sectors of the community.
To achieve this, we will be putting on a variety of activities that may include sessions such as: indoor sports activities for over 50’s, orienteering sessions with local schools, healthy cookery classes and setting up digital inclusion clubs in collaboration with Armley Helping Hands. Again, stay tuned for more details and updates to come!
